The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is the governing body for intellectual property rights within the EU. This includes trademarks, which are symbols, logos, words, sounds, colors, or combinations thereof used to identify and distinguish goods or services of one party from those of others.

A protected trademark at the EUIPO is one that has been officially registered with this body and thus has legal protection across all member states of the European Union. This means that the owner of the trademark has the exclusive right to use that trademark in connection with the goods or services for which it is registered. They can prevent others from using a confusingly similar mark without their permission.

Applying for a EU trademark involves several steps including an application, a thorough search for similar existing trademarks, an examination of the application by the EUIPO, and a period of opposition where others can object to the registration. Once a trademark is registered, it is valid for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely, each time for periods of 10 years.

The EUIPO's database, eSearch plus, provides public access to information about registered EU trademarks.
